Watermelon Tea Recipes

These are three fun and easy watermelon tea recipes. Perfect for hot summer days!

The only hard part of these recipes is picking a good juicy and sweet watermelon - which is a task that still eludes me. Cantaloupe no problem, watermelon...problem. So I checked to see what the experts have to say, all good watermelons have certain characteristic that you should look for:

  • The first thing you will need to look at is the shape of your watermelon. Symmetry is important.

  • Then gently press the skin. A good watermelon will be firm and will not have soft spots.

  • What color is your watermelon? Dark green watermelons tend to be sweeter than the lighter ones.

  • Now pick up your watermelon. Did you know that watermelons are more than 90 percent water? This means that a juicy watermelon will be heavy for its size.

  • To determine if your watermelon is ripe check for these:

1. On the bottom of your watermelon, you will find a discolored spot where it was in contact with the ground while it was growing. If the spot is a yellowish-white then your melon is probably ripe.

2. Another way you can test for ripeness is by scratching the surface of your watermelon with your fingernail. A greenish-white color beneath the outermost layer is what you are looking for and indicates your watermelon is ripe.

3. Then there is the illusive - for me anyway - "thump" test. if you know what you are listening for. Supposedly, when you thump the side of a ripe watermelon, it will sound as if it is hollow.

Pour the water over the tea and hibiscus flower. Steep for 5 minutes. Strain and cool.
