So what are tea cakes?
Tea cakes are normally a kind of bread - or cake - served during afternoon tea.
Traditionally, tea cakes are not frosted although nowadays you will find recipes for tea cakes which call for frosting - also called icing.
Tea cakes should be sturdy enough to be picked up with your fingers.
Depending on which part of the world you call home, tea cakes will have different meaning:
- If you are from Northern Ireland or from Scotland then you will expect your tea cake to be soft and to
have a topping on a biscuit base, for example:
chocolate.
- If you are from England - Yorkshire especially - then you will expect your tea cake to be some kind of bread roll. However,
not all parts of England are the same.
Some other areas when they refer to tea cake mean a light, sweet yeast bread which will also contains some dried fruit or fruit peel. Your tea
cake will be
served open faced, toasted and buttered. In Kent, your tea cake will be called a "huffkin" and will often be flavored with hops. In Sussex,
your tea cakes will contain cinnamon, nutmeg and even sometimes rose water.
- If you are from Sweden then you will expect your tea cake to be a sweetened wheat soda bread. It will be served warmed and accompanied
with butter and jam and sometimes even with cheese!
- If you are from the "good old USA" and from the southeast then you will expect your tea cake to be a cookie! If you are
from another part of the United States, when you hear tea cake, you will think a spiced cake topped with powdered sugar or sometimes...icing.
- If you are from Australia then a tea cake is a large cake which is sometimes sprinkled with a cinnamon/sugar mixture and is served warm.
