Fun St. Patrick's Day Party Ideas Irish Tea Party
As you know, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated every year on March 17th. But have you ever wondered why? What is the big deal
about Saint Patrick whom I discovered was not even Irish?
Saint Patrick who lived from about 387 to 460 AD (some say 493) is the most recognized patron saint of Ireland. By birth, he was
a roman citizen from
what we now call England. Saint Patrick's Day also known as St. Paddy's day is actually the assumed date of his death!
You may be surprised to find out that two letters have been discovered and attributed to Patrick himself. From these letters,
we are able to discover some of the details of his life.
St. Patrick was captured and abducted in Britain by some Irish raiders at the age of about 16. He was taken to Ireland where he
became a slave for six years before he was able to escape and return home. In his own words Patrick says that his faith grew while he was
in captivity working as a herdsman in the fields. He also states that he heard God's voice telling him that
he would soon go home. He was - shortly after - able to escape his master and to return home.
Shortly after his return, Patrick said that:
"I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he
carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: "The Voice of the Irish". As I began the letter, I imagined in
that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea - and
they cried out, as with one voice: "We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us."
This second revelation, told Patrick to return to Ireland as a missionary. Soon after this event, Patrick began his religious training which lasted
more than fifteen years.
As you well know, St. Patrick did return to Ireland to convert the Irish to Christianity. Legend tells us that Patrick
taught the concept of the Trinity - 3 persons into one: Father, Son and Holy Spirit - by referring to the shamrock, a 3-leaved clover.
Patrick is definitely one of the most well known figures of world history and what a better way to celebrate than an Irish tea party?
