Recipe for Pumpkin Scones

This is delicious recipe for pumpkin scones. These spiced pumpkin scones are perfect during the fall - and holiday - season.

You can use either fresh or canned pumpkin and as a substitute you could use yam potatoes or butternut squash, both would work very well with these pumpkin scones.

Pumpkins belong to the squash family - as does butternut squash. Pumpkins are orange in color when ripe - or dark green while growing. Pumpkins grow from trailing vines and they are cultivated in North America, Europe, India as well as some other countries. Pumpkins vary greatly in their shape. Pumpkins can weigh from just a few pounds to up to 80 pounds! Pumpkins are not a vegetable but rather a fruit.

In the United States, pumpkins are seasonal and mainly used in cooking during the fall season - from September to December.

These pumpkin scones would be a wonderful addition to any fall tea party.

Try them and then please come back and leave a review!

Ingredients for Spiced Pumpkin Scone Recipe

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - optional

  • 6 tablespoons cold butter

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

  • 1 large egg - beaten

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree

Method for Spiced Pumpkin Scone Recipe

Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, spices and salt together in a large bowl. Add the cold butter in little chunks. You can either blend the butter in the flour mixture by hand - my preferred method - or you can use a pastry blender. When your butter and flour mixture is well blended, it will resemble coarse sand.

Make a well and pour the egg, pumpkin puree, cream and vanilla extract, mix with a fork. When you can no longer use the fork, use your hands to form a soft and pliable dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface.

Roll your dough into a circle with a rolling pin until it is about 3/4 to 1 inch in thickness. Cut into 8 triangles with a knife and place on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 400 degree F for about 15 to 20 minutes - depending on your oven - or until the edges and the top are nice and golden.

Glaze - recipe below - while still warm.

Makes 8 pumpkin scones.
