What is anise?

Anise - or in Latin, Pimpinella Anisum - is an herb whose leaves, seeds and/or flowers are used for flavoring foods or at times medicine and natural products.

Anise comes from the same family as fennel, dill, caraway, and cumin.

The anise seeds are used in baking such as in Italian biscotti or German springerle. They are also used in breads and sometimes sausages. You will also find anise seeds in some liquors such as French anisette and Greek ouzo.

Anise seeds can also be used in herbal remedies such as tisanes or teas. It is recommended for nursing moms to increase their milk supply.
