July 4th is a very important holiday for us Americans, here are some interesting facts about the revolutionary war:
- At the time of the Revolutionary War there were 3.5 million people living in the United States. 200,000 men - and some women -
were enrolled in the army. 4,435 were killed in combat and more than 6,000 were wounded.
- Even though the last major battle of the war ended in 1781 with the surrender of General Cornwallis to General Washington.
However, the war was not officially over until two years later when the Treaty of Paris was signed. This Treaty was signed
on September 3, 1783 and was ratified by
the
United States Congress on January 14, 1784.
- The last of the British troops to leave the United States left from New York on November 25, 1783.
- The first public 4th of July event to take place at the White House occurred in 1804.
- July 4th became a national holiday in 1941.
- Our national animal almost was...a turkey! At least that was Benjamin Franklin's choice. However, he was outvoted when
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle instead.
- Even though the call to arms was for men, several women donned the uniform of a Revolutionary soldier and fought
against the British.
