Irish Brown Soda Bread Recipe

This is a traditional Irish brown soda bread recipe which is so easy to make and quite delicious.

Irish soda bread is a quick bread which means that it does not use yeast but rather baking soda as a leavening agent. The basic ingredients for this brown soda bread recipe are brown flour, white flour, salt, baking soda, and buttermilk. However, know that you can add other ingredients such as raisins, nuts, etc.

Even though I have heard that soda bread did not originate in Ireland, it is quite popular there now. In Northern Ireland, soda bread is known as "wheaten bread."

Irish Brown Soda Bread

Brown Soda Bread Ingredients

  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour - I like to use whole wheat pastry flour

  • 2 cups of all-purpose white flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups of buttermilk

Irish Soda Bread Method

In a medium size bowl, mix the white and brown flours, the baking soda and the salt. Make a well in the middle of the flour. Pour the buttermilk into the well and mix with a fork or a wooden spoon.

The dough will be on the sticky side. Turn over onto a floured surface and knead four to five times.

With floured hands, form into a ball. Make a cross on the top with a sharp knife.

Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 450 degrees F for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 400 and bake another 15 minutes. You will know the bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped.
