Recipe for Hot Dog Scones

These tasty hot dog scones are a cinch to make.

These scones were birthed when I decided to come up with a scone for a 4th of July tea party. Hot dogs seemed like the perfect all American 4th of July event. So I decided to make this recipe. Now, my kids were not so sure. One of them announced - very loudly - "sounds disgusting!" However, I was not deterred and made them and there were a hit!

But don't you take my word for it. Give them a try and then please come back to leave your review. Your comments - reviews, tips, recipes - are so important to other tea lovers just like you. They are what make this site a fun and helpful community. You can give your input here.

Hot Dog Scones

Hot Dog Scone Recipe: Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 stick cold butter cut into little chunks - 1/2 cup

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 2 large eggs - beaten

  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

  • 1 cup cut up hot-dogs - about 2

Hot Dog Scone Recipe: Method

In a medium size bowl, place the flour, cornmeal and the baking powder. Add the pieces of butter. I like to use my fingers for this step but a pastry blender will work as well. Between your fingers rub the flour mixture and the butter together until it resembles coarse sand.

Add the salt and combine well. Add the beaten eggs and the buttermilk. Mix well with a fork until the mixture forms a sticky dough. Add the cheese and the hot-dog pieces. Mix together.

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough until it holds together. Divide the dough in half and roll each half into a circle about 1 inch thick.

Cut the circle into eight wedges. Repeat this process with the second half of the dough.

Place each wedge onto a greased cookie sheet about 1 inch apart.

Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve while warm.
